What's in a name?
We are asked on a daily basis, "What's with your company name?" People want to know if we're in the alternative health business. They want to know why it's so long.
Curiosity is good. We LIKE being asked. I'm not here to dispel any myths or discourage people from asking. I just thought I'd publish it once and see if we got any difference in the types of questions we get about our name.
Once upon a time, there lived a man who wrote a book about a chap who thought his biggest problem was that they were about to bulldoze his house to put in highway only to find out that that was the least of his worries. The book was a success, so he wrote a sequel to it. Then seeing the wild success of other 3 book series, he turned his story into a trilogy. But the people wanted more. Eventually he added two more books to his trilogy, making it the worlds first 5 book trilogy. The man's name was Douglas Adams and the 5 book trilogy was the infamous Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series.
But Mr. Adams had another trilogy in him, this time a 2 book trilogy. This one was about a detective, a detective who, believing in the philosophy of the interconnectedness of all things, had developed a very unique method of solving cases, in which, upon being given the case, he would spend the entire night in serious consideration of the challenges that lay ahead in solving the case while drinking himself silly. First thing the next morning, which inevitably turned out to be late the next afternoon and still suffering from a pretty serious hangover, he would pull out of his driveway and follow the first car to go by. Where ever it ended up was the location of his first clue. The first book of this trilogy was named Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
We couldn't just steal the entire name, so we modified it a bit. One of our founding members, Andy Swiston (still around, but not with us at the moment) lived on a street named Stonebridge, so we picked that to replace Dirk Gently's. Since we weren't a detective agency, we decided to change that to Consulting Agency. We added the Ltd to the end because that is one of the suffixes that corporations in the state of Illinois are allowed to use and Andy always wanted to be a Ltd. Besides, it sets us apart from all the other Corp's and Co's out there.
The part we were especially fond of in the name was the Holistic part. We knew that it would bring all kinds of questions and misjudgements about what type of organization we are, but when you sit down and analyze what the word Holistic really means, it's the most perfect fit you can come up with for a consulting company. Why? By thinking about your project Holistically, we consider how what we are doing for you will impact other parts of your organization. We, too, believe in the philosophy of the interconnectedness of all things and as such feel that a holistic approach to our work best meets the needs of our clients.
That's the story in a nutshell. If you haven't already, I highly encourage you to read both of Douglas Adams' trilogies. They are insightful (or should I say, inciteful?) and most of all, fun.
